As a group, we were driven by the art of construction and its impact on the objects and activities in urban public spaces. We didn’t stick to traditional creative boundaries—instead, we saw creativity itself as our discipline, shaping everything we did.

Working with tight budgets became our strength, pushing us to get the most out of a limited material palette. This limitation sparked a lot of innovation and helped us come up with creative design solutions.

This foursome of Adelaide artists, architecture graduates and designers take their role as urban architects seriously. Not only a deft hand with power tools, the talented troop designed and crafted instillations and furniture for the likes of Moving Music, university art exhibition displays , Adelaide Fringe Venue, The Depot and PARKing day.

The Depot

A major Adelaide Fringe venue located on the old bus depot site.

The spontaneous, industrial aesthetic was created with the use of lightweight and cost-effective construction materials - shipping containers and timber pallets.  Central to the design intent was the use of recycled materials coupled with public participation that saw the venue evolve throughout the Fringe Festival.

Arabana Exhibition

A series of elegant columns provided substantial support for a light framework, delicately suspending the artwork in a harmonious arrangement.

Each column consisted of three parts: a base of concrete, infused with sand from far north South Australia. This base was joined to a lightweight timber column that supported a cube at its apex. Each cube was perforated on all sides, allowing the wooden beams suspending the artwork to be hung at any angle.

The Tunnels Exhibition

The Tunnels was a visual and performing arts showcase featuring South Australia’s young emerging artists.

This project was a challenge for us for two reasons. We couldn't hang art on the walls because they were easily damaged. Second, we couldn't build on-site before opening night in such a tight location in an expensive hotel.

Our solution: an entire skeletal-like timber structure was prefabricated off-site, transported to the tunnels, and assembled in 3 days. The frame allowed artwork to hang away from the walls while conveying a sense of being inside a shell - hidden but conscious.

Moving Music

Fascination Street undertook the massive challenge of realising fellow creative Sam Wright's vision. Moving Music was a roving music event with spectators moving from secret stage to secret stage, discovering the eccentricities of each curated venue and the surprise resident musician as they went.

We designed and built each stage around a theme, ensuring everything was gone once the event ended. Themes included a giant cardboard box alley stage, a crate castle on an island, and an underwater party on Peel Street, complete with floating jellyfish.
